Course Websites, My Classrooms, and (maybe) WebCT

[20] TOL 4 - Course Websites, My Classrooms, and (maybe) WebCT - WebCT?  For me?  Maybe not all of it.  Maybe none of it.  But you may just want to use some of it if you find out about it and its automatic access through My Classrooms.  During this hands-on workshop we will look at how you can do a course website linked to My Classrooms with your VU webspace alone, and how that might be supplemented by WebCT.  Robert Jantzen, Mathematical Sciences

What I hope to have you do, based on knowledge of MS Word ordinary text editing and Windows Explorer/My Computer file management:

• Open Internet Explorer or Netscape (your choice) to the VU Home Page, Log in, Look at the "Edit your Account" page [note wildcat photo permission option].
  Look at one of your My Classroom classes for this completed semester Spr03
  [or if you are daring, to one for next fall semester Fall03].
  Click on your name at the top of the page under where your photo would be if you gave permission for its viewing, note your homepage server 2-digit number in the "wwwXX." part of your home page address.
  Add a named hyperlink to your My Classroom page by Editing these links at the top of the page.
• Connect through your browser to the WebCT course link of that class on My Classroom, log in and explore a bit.
• Open MS Front Page Explorer and access 1) your VU webspace and 2) your WebCT webspace for that class; Create a file on your VU webspace with Front Page and upload a file to both locations.
• Make a WebCT link to the uploaded file by Editing the Table of Contents.

Most of you already have Villanova University home pages, but some were set up for you and some of you have an inadvertently disabled default home page and so have no home page (we can fix that). I will have to see what the group's common background is in order to know what we can assume in this guided exploration. I would hope that the more accomplished participants can lend a hand to those with little experience as we go [cooperative learning?].

This is not a workshop where you can go from nothing to accomplished web manager in 50 some minutes, but it will show you the ropes and with a little playing around in your office, you can be successful at managing a class website with or without WebCT. [If you need extra help, you can then take UNIT workshops on Front Page or WebCT knowing where to take what you learned and use it. Even when you think you are experienced, you can pick up little tricks from users in these workshops.]
