Subject: Utils link uppercase instead of lower case Date: Tue, 01 Feb 2000 14:13:44 -0600 From: Robert Jantzen To: monks@uofs.edu, bob Dear Ken, I went back to your site and found the utils web page, but the link to the utils worksheet is mispelled: the file name starts util... but the link is to Util... I did a directory listing and found the file. You might want to fix that. However, when I tried to execute the utils worksheet, it would not execute and I had to step by step enter each of the commands. but then I could succeed in creating a utils.m file anywhere, no matter how I use the lib commands of you other instructions about MyLib. I am using MAPLE V5.1. SO I did not give up. Since the worksheets I downloaded were behaving funny, I copied the inputs individually into a blank worksheet and added the MyLib commands after restart (did not work again for savelib), but added a save to my top level C: location which did work when I executed the worksheet and then I copied the utils.m and chaos.m files over to my directory with the other files... Then I found that your chaos help worksheet does not load utils.m so I added that and finally the help page started working. Until the line: AnimatedGraphicalAnalysis(f,-2,2,.65,50); which would not execute and each time I tried to enter it, it put a new blank line underneath and each time I would hit enter, more blank lines, indicating funny behavior of the worksheet. [Later note: miraculously, when i deleted the argument 50 and retyped it in, it worked!] Then this happened again with the line: Bifurcation(Q,-2,0.25,500,100,0); Then it did not understand "affine" command in the output of: mb:=BarnsInt([[1,2],[2,3],[3,1],[4,2]],[.4,.4,.4]); In fact none of the affine commands later on are actually evaluated in the outputs. Does this mean they have not been defined, or are they supposed to not be evaluated? I got nearly to the end of the help file but started running out of memory so I stopped at 3.5 MEG output file. It is very nice. I had a book in Mathematica on chaos years ago, hoping someone would develop this stuff for MAPLE. It looks like you put in a lot of work. I hope it has been appreciated. Anyway, do you have any idea why am I having such difficulties? I would appreciate any help you can give me. thanks bob Subject: RE: Chaos worksheets: where is the utils file? Dear Bob, You are right! This is just a bug on my part. I revised the chaos library (Version 2.53 :) ) and just uploaded it to the web now. It no longer requires the utils library. The only command in the utils library that I wanted to have available in the chaos library is "Table", so what I did is copy the source code for Table from the utils library to the chaos library. It should work as a standalone library now. Thanks for pointing out that mistake! > You output looks very nice. Thanks. I would of course be interested in hearing about your experiences with the software and am open to suggestions and feedback. I am teaching the undergraduate chaos and fractals course this semester, so my students will be using that software quite a bit. I also have lots of other routines I want to add to it, so it should be updated quite often during the term. Thanks for finding that bug! It's tough to keep all this software straight!
