 Historical/biographical note:

Albert W. Tucker, a professor in the Princeton University

Mathematics Department, conceived the idea of this oral

history project. Professor Charles C. Gillispie of the

Princeton University Program in History of Science arranged

for support from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. Professor

                 aphical note:

Tucker and Dr. William Aspray, then of the Charles Babbage

Institute, conducted the majority of the interviews.

Frederik Nebeker, a graduate student in the Program in

History of Science, edited the transcripts.

Summary: These interviews concern primarily the mathematics community

at Princeton in the 1930s. Most of the discussion focuses

on the institutional and social context of the development

of an eminent mathematical research and graduate education

                   center.

In addition to discussion about the Department of Mathematics

and the School of Mathematics at the Institute for Advanced

Study, the interviews contain biographical information on

                   many mathematicians.

Notes: Most of the interviews were conducted between April, 1984 and

June, 1985. Three earlier interviews of Albert W. Tucker

that had not been transcribed have been added to the

collection as have three written reminiscences.

Individual interviews in this collection have been cataloged

                   separately.
