Netscape Email stuff [filters!]
[current: Messenger 7.2 or Mozilla Thunderbird 1.0]

For now the best way to manage our email is with Netscape7.2 (soon Thunderbird 1.0). Here are some suggestions for folder division organization and backup instructions:

The short story:

  1. In whatever version of Netscape Messenger you are using, right click on the folder name "Local Folders" where all your email is stored on your hard drive. Select Properties. You can then mouse drag select the folder address and copy it.
You can then paste it into the file address window of Windows Explorer to go check it out, like seeing how many MEG you have stored there. Only 700 MEG fits onto one CD and mine is now up to 1.6GIGs for 1999-2005 (too big!).
  2. With the file address, you can browse in your CD writer software to the folder location and load it into the CD project. If too big, you will have to selectively load parts. The alternative is a 1 or 4 GIG USB port memory stick. Copy it there and transfer to the corresponding Local Folders location on your home computer.
  3. To access your email again, you must copy the contents back to the Local Folders location of your email software, Netscape or Thunderbird [http://www.mozilla.org/], which share a Mozilla foundation somehow.
  4. FILTERS and multiple folders are crazy not to use these days with too much email flowing into our inboxes.
Unfortunately you cannot export and import these filters yet, so it pays to keep a text file list of their contents when you need to move on.
