secants and tangents

tanslope.mws
Slope of a tangent line.
This example shows how to calculate the slope of the secant line to the graph of a function and then its limit: the slope of the tangent line. Then one evaluates the new function which represents the value of y along the tangent line so that one can plot the set of the original function and the tangent line function at some point together on the same axes.

sec2tan.mw
The tangent line as the limit of a family of secant lines.
This example shows how to construct a family of secant lines whose limit is the tangent line at a given point of the graph of a function. We then animate the result.

tanlines.mw
Graphs of the family of tangent lines to the graph of a function.
How to generate the graphs of tangent lines to the graph of a function of one variable, with the original point of tangency as a parameter. This involves the family of linear approximations of the function, which is an important concept in calculus that is traditionally not explored. It allows you to go to a higher level with this idea, to find the tangent lines which pass through a designated target point, which is where one should fire nose or tail lasers along the direction of motion of the trajectory of a game rocket on a screen.

VIEWWIN MWS
Choosing the Viewing Window.
This shows some examples of how one can use MAPLE to find the appropriate
VIEWing WINdow for the graph of a function. The default horizontal range is [-10,10].
The vertical range is then chosen to show every value assumed in this interval.

MAKETABL MWS
How to make a table of data in numerically exploring limits, for example.

PWRFUNCS MWS
Power functions explored graphically.

LOGFUNCS MWS
Log functions with arbitrary bases.

LIMITF MWS
Floating Point Limits

PIECEWIS MWS
How to use the piecewise command in defining a piecewise function and in using it in calculus: limits, plots, derivatives, and integrals. It works as you would expect in all cases.

surddiff.mw
SURDS (roots) and DIFFERENTIATION

italy94.mw
National High School Exam in Italy 1994.
Amazingly interesting question, we could never ask US students to do something like this, yet all graduating seniors in scientific high schools in Italy in 1994 had to do this problem.
